This is during my trip with some of the other exchange students of Salvador to the Chapada Diamantina region of Brazil. It is located in the interior regions of the state of Bahia, and we visited it in December.

Here I am with the other exchange students by one of the many waterfalls.

Fear my super strength!

Nothing like a flag pic.

Apparently, I went to Germany instead of Brazil.

I *heart* Lençois! I don’t *heart* the apparently tipsy person who took this photo.

A shot of this VERY small but quaint town of Lençóis, Bahia, Brazil.

The monkeys that are all over Brazil.

Another waterfall.

Snorkeling in a cave.

A cool looking view from inside these rocky areas on the inside of Brazil.

Some Christmas spirit.

Let me look into my crystal ball…

A little Christmas party in Salvador. Am I the only one bringing the cheer?

This is my family vacation from Christmas through a bit after New Year. Where we went to my father’s tiny home town of Nova Canaã

My host mom, Ana Paula, and host sis, Amanda, as we stop at a restaurant during our road trip to my host father’s very small and rural home town of Nova Canaã.

Hohoho!

I  like Nova Canaã already because I get to ride the Horsies, yay!

My host father, Eliezer, with Amanda.

Climbing the hill and posing, multitasking never made such a good desktop background.

Staring contest: Amanda v. Cow

Just hittin’ the dusty trail

Chicks in a pic

So in addition to the horses, cows, and chicks, old Mac Donald has a kitty! E-i-e-i-o.

Salvador has a ferry boat that runs regularly between the nearby island of Itaparica and the city. It takes both passengers and cars.

Me on the ferry boat with Salvador in the background.

As if Salvador didn’t have enough beaches, people like to go north to the many beaches along the “Green Line” the line of beaches running up until the neighboring state of Sergipe. One popular one is Praia do Forte.

Nothing like some cheesy photos with the host mom!

I am just that glamorous.

This is at Projeto Tamar, a place that works to raise aware about marine wildlife and protect the sea turtles.

Amanda and the fishies.

Amanda loves boxes. Note the smug and satisfied expression.

Lavagem do Bonfim – It’s a holiday to commemorate the washing of the large Catholic church known as Bonfim. Basically everyone puts on white and walks for quite a while until they reach the church. The saying is “Quem tem fé vai a pe.”

Yes, exchange students are weird.

There’s a lot of pretty and colorful graffiti in Salvador. The government gave up arresting everyone who did it, a long time ago.

Here is the Bonfim Church.

Those colorful things are these bracelets that you buy very cheap. People tie them to the church to make a wish, and when it falls off your wish is supposed to come true.

Baianas, they are a very common sight in Salvador as an iconic mix of African and European. You can often find them making acarajé (this really delicious street snack) but in this case, of the holiday of the Lavagem do Bonfim, they along with many other followers are walking to the church for this holiday ritual.

Being blessed.

CARNAVALLLLLLL!!!

The Salvador queen of Carnaval

Nothing say Carnaval in Brazil like some random men in skirts.

The “Trio Electronico” (Carnaval truck) of Claudia Leitte, on of the MANY performers at Carnaval 2009 in Salvador during that 5 day party.

The crowds at Carnaval.

Probably my favorite picture.

This is what happens when you party too hard, and it was only about 9pm.
