Nico's Report

April 2, 2008

Hello dear friends.

I'm so exciting about telling you my last experiences in the United States. First of all, I would like to give thanks to Dan Arnold (a member of my Host Rotary Club) and Gory (his wife) who were hosting me for about a week and a half, while my first host family went on a trip. His parents and they treated me amazingly. They took me to the Everglades National park and to a Spanish restaurant in Miami. When I had to leave their house I almost cried. I had a wonderful time with them.

Last month I changed of host family. I would say that it was actually very sad to say goodbye to my first host family (Casey family). I stayed with them for almost five months. In the evening of the last day, my host mother cooked a very delicious dinner. They laughed a lot when I said that: "this is the Last Supper." At the end I gave them a big hug of farewell and I told them: "I won't ever forget you."

Last February I changed of host family. My new host family is the Bastings. It is made up of Dirk (host father), Rosemarie (host mother) and Jean-Marie (host brother). I'm very happy living with them because they are just awesome. Their apartment is in a big condominium, which is right in front of the beach, and it also has a huge pool. It's gorgeous. They have taken me many times to the opera, concerts and spectacles. It's a lot of fun and most important very interesting. They have a very social life. They almost always take me when they go out to have dinner with friends. They spoil me a lot. Rosemarie and Dirk are so generous and kind. I'm enjoying so much living with them. My host mother and host father cook delicious food. I hope I didn't gain too much weight.

My host family and I went on a trip the last days of February for 6 days. We visited the city of San Augustine in Florida, Savannah in Georgia and Charleston in South Carolina. It was terrific. In those cities we visited many museums and historical places such as Forts and old buildings. I learned so much about the American History. We ate in many different restaurants. My favorite city was San Augustine. I loved the old architecture of this city. We went in a Costume Photo Studio and the photographer took a hysterical picture of me! I'm dressing like a Spanish Conqueror. It looks pretty real. You can see it in my pictures file.

My grades of the third quarter were phenomenal. Most of my teachers congratulated me for the big effort. My graduation will be on May 24. I'm so excited about that day.

During the week (March 20th-28th) of my spring break I attended a Language School in order to improve my English. All paid by my host parents. I was even longer than a normal school day, but I think it was very helpful and interesting. I did a lot of reading and conversation exercises. The first day, I took the placement exam and my score was 91 over 100. So I was placed in the highest level. The last day I took the final exam, which was very difficult, however I succeed, my score was 97 over 100. I'm so happy and joyful. This is one of my biggest achievements of this exchange year.

Thanks a lot to all of my host families, and of course thanks Rotary International for this fabulous experience!
