Matteo's Report

September 19, 2007

Hi everybody,

After a month in the US, this is my first report from the Florida Keys.

Let’s start from the beginning: the first day I came in the USA I got lost in the Miami International Airport and I lost the flight to Key West, so I spent the night in hotel. Anyway, the next day I met my host father Chris and the rest of the family: all of them are kind with me.

The weather is so hot here, during all the day: you can’t go outside that immediately you want come back inside the house where the AC works so good…anyway I have just finished my first four weeks of school and I can say that is easier than in Italy and I think I’m doing quite well for the moment, but sometimes I need my small dictionary, but it’s normal: I hope to throw it away during the next 3-4 weeks. I chose to study Spanish too, because nearly half of the population is of Hispanic origins. I can understand Spanish well: it’s quite similar to Italian. A bad thing is that I’m forgetting French and I’m starting to think in English, but that’s a good thing.

Our school is enormous, it’s full of labs, computer rooms, a big gym, a weight room, a construction lab and so on.. you can do whatever you want to.

People here are friendly, I’ve met a lot of guys and sometimes I’m involved in a lot of activities (which I’ve never tried before, like tubing and rock-climbing). There are many activities to do, for example I joined the high school swimming team and now I have practice every single day after school. It’s a pity, because the swimming season ends in November, while in Italy it lasts all year round..

However, a couple of weeks ago I had my first competitions in Key West and I did quite well, and against Coral Shores high school too.

I have already met the other exchange student twice, and just last week there was the first inbound orientation. They are friendly and most of them speak English quite well. I’d like to spend much time with them, but I’m the only exchange student in the keys while the others are mainly in Miami.

Time is passing so fast here.. one month has already passed.. I’ll try to enjoy myself as much as I can.. a special thanks to my parents, my sponsor club, my host club, my host family and to the Rotary International that made this happen.

Matteo.
