As I sit here, I am on my friend Taru's computer with my sweatshirt on
my head because i cant tell if im hot or cold and will probably be
putting it back on in about 5 min. anyway. This means spring is
coming, as it snows and the snow on the ground melts simultaneously.
This also means I have friends who know me well enough to know that im
not crazy when i do such things. The latter is a very good feeling,
and something that I thought would never happen when I first came to
Finland and I couldnt make sense of these people at all. The second
isnt so good because I just got used to winter, and in spring
everything is disgusting and muddy, and I just got used to winter and
was thouroughly enjoying the eternal darkness and whatnot. Strange to
say, but it was nice. Anyways, I guess when in Finland you can
complain about weather no matter what happens, so I'll move on. The
Wyrd Sisters play was a huge success. We had rather small audiences
for the 4 showings, but it got better each time, and by the final
night it was perfect. And hilarious. However, it was in english due to
it being organized through the IB international school, so the actors
understood what was going on more than the audience, and many ironies
and innuendos were lost on the audience. We knew what we were talking
about though, and we knew it was funny. Maybe next time we should have
signs telling when to appluase and laugh. For the spring production we
will be performing a version of Kalevala, a classical finnish epic
poem\story, which will help me to have a better understanding of
finnish literature than I do now, concidering the only finnish classic
I have read so far is Seitsemän Veljestä. Don't know if I will have a
part in this one yet, but I hope so, concidering acting is my main
hobby here, and without it I will be faced with a severe case of too
much time on my hands.Wanhattanssi was another major happening lately.
It is when everyone in 2nd year dances all the traditional dances such
as waltz, tango, rag, ect. I didnt participate due to having play
practices the same time as the dance practices, but i went and took
pictures of everyone in their beautiful clothes. Some spent so much
money on their dresses and made their hair appointments a year or so
in advance. Think prom with more hype even. Pankkarit was another
happening the day before the dances. It is when the 3rd years or ABIs
are kicked out of the school by the underclassman and then ride around
the city in a parade on painted trucks celebrating their leaving
school, and then go to party, whilst still dressed in costumes that
they were wearing on the trucks. There were all kinds of costumes;
duct tape man, white people pretending to be black, and charecters
from a clockwork orange to name a few. To clarify things, this has to
do with the dances because the reason the 2nd years dance is to
celebrate now being the oldest ones in the school.Other than this,
time has been spent with Daniella, a girl who is from helsinki and was
on exchange in the US last year. She came to oulu, and we had a fun
filled week in her company. Next week there is no school, and many
people I know will be going to ski resorts and to their cottages to
ski for a week. I will be staying in oulu, but probably cross country
skiing with my hostmom on the oulu river before the ice melts or in an
area near our house where you can ski. Its kind of amazing I havent
been skiing and its almost spring, thats why this coming week I will
be making up for it immensly im sure. Anyways, thanks for everything,
and good luck. Jennifer |
