Well..bringing in the New Year 2007 was like none I had known before.
Usually, in The Bahamas I would always go to church with my family. It was
a bit different this year. First of all in Ecuador there is this
particular tradition where most of the men dress like females for money in
the streets. Its hilarious! And some people wear mask like political
persons or other famous persons. I cant tell you how many people were the
new president. And also they burn figures at midnight to celebrate the
incoming year called Anos Viejos...Simply out with the old and in with the
new!
We started by preparing a delicious dinner which of course I helped with
becuase I love the kitchen. And of course I changed my hair again which I
do all the time here. It interesting for my host parents. In Ecuador
family gatherings seem to be very important so we had some family over and
ate until oour hearts were content. Then there is this other tradition of
eating grapes at midnight. Outside our window we watched fireworks almost
everywhere and our neighbours jumping over sticks, running with suitcases
and burning anos viejos and nuevos outside. All for luck and to bring in
the new year.
Soon after we decided to work off the food we had eaten earlier so we
danced..alot! I even did a small presentation for the family. They kept
asking me to do more it felt like a one man show. But finally I got
everyone on the dance floor and we danced until about 3 in the morning. (
and one look at the kitchen alone made me wonder what time we would go to
bed). Even after that my host sister and some of her friends and I went
for a party. It was amazing to see so many people on the road and just
outside as if it were 8 at night. But we ended up coming back because who
wants to pay 15 for an hour left at a fiesta? It was nice to go to sleep
anyway.
Ill send some piz! Besos!
