Davy's Report

September 15, 2006

Hi everyone:

I am davy. I am from Taiwan. I just arrived here on Aug. 8th. Everything is new to me, like people, weather, school, food, activities, etc. Let me tell you how it is going so far.

I still remember that the day I left Taiwan. My parents and both my brothers waved goodbye to me. I burst out crying after they left the airport. After all, this is my first time leaving my parents and my country, Taiwan. By the way, this is also my first time taking an airplane. My flight wasn’t a direct flight, so I went to Hong Kong first. The airport at Hong Kong is quite complicated. You have to take MRT to the gate. People there they speak English. None speaks Chinese. I asked many people where I could go upstairs. But they spoke English too fast; I just answered “OK! OK!” Actually, I didn’t understand what they were talking about. At last, I found the way by myself.

On the plane to Las Angeles, I met a Christian woman. She was nice to me. We talked a lot about the course of being exchange student and Christ. Additionally, it was really cold on the plane. That made my legs sore very much.
I went to restroom frequently because it’s warmer.

Finally, I arrived in the airport in Los Angeles. It was big there. We took the bus to arrival lobby. I was confused when I wanted to apply the entry formality. You have to find which line you belong to so that you can get your luggage smoothly. Unfortunately, my flight to Miami delayed because of the typhoon in Hong Kong. A woman asked me whether I wanted to stay over night with her and her grandson. I have no choice. So I decided to stay with them in the hotel. They were nice to me. She prepared meals for me, so I didn’t pay any cent for hotel and meals. The next day, we took the plane to Miami on time.

At the time I went out of the gate, I saw my first home stay family, the Bull family. They have three kids, Reily, Regan and Lindsey. Although we just lived together for two weeks, I still felt happy to be company with them. We went kayaking and played soccer. I love grandma. She always corrected my English grammar and told me the name of everything in English. We played puzzles and numbers games. Lindsey is cute. I recorded some films about her funny actions. Reily is crazy for soccer and online games. Regan is fashionable. You can’t believe that she is only 9 years old. She thinks of herself as a super idol. Cindy shared her life in university.
She helps my English homework. Chris is busy on his work. Anyway; I had fun with my first family.

Two weeks later, I change to my second host family, the Grego family. They have no children, but two dogs, Sabatian and Holly. The dogs are adorable and funny. I love my bed here. It’s soft and comfortable. Jo is good at cooking and baking, so I can eat lots of tasty food here. I always asked them questions, so they think that I seem to want to know everything. Actually, I do. I want to know everything because they are new to me. I know that I have a strong curiosity. I don’t think asking questions is weird. This is the best way to improve my English.

My friends here are nice. We played a lot (see my pictures.) On one Sunday night, We went to Key Largo playing soccer and Frisbee. I knew lots of people and made friend with them. I was so happy that day! It’s awesome. I also went tubing with my friends. The boat was fast! I fell into the ocean. The see water was salty that hurt my eyes.

The weather here is always hot. It’s hotter than Taiwan, but I am getting used to it. They don’t drink hot water because of the weather. We have air conditioner in each classroom in Marathon High. Some people think this is normal. However, we don’t have air conditioner in my school in Taiwan! Moreover, just because the hot weather, the activities in here are all related to the ocean, like tubing, boating, fishing, scuba, snorkeling, and so on. I love these activities.

We live near the ocean, so we can see the beautiful sunset everyday. Just because we live near the ocean, “Hurricane” is the biggest disaster to us. I have been one Hurricane so far. We put the shutters on and carried everything into the shed. It was a hard work because the shutters were so heavy. But it was an unforgettable experience to me.

Some people asked me whether I missed everything in Taiwan. I said not at all, but I keep in touch with them. I don’t know why I don’t missed Taiwan. Maybe that’s because I enjoyed here very much, I have no time to think about this question. Anyway, I love everything here! By the way, we are planning to go to Washington D.C. on Thanks giving. That would be awesome.  I must have fun there.
