Church Every Saturday around 6:15 I attend a Catholic Church with my host grand-mother and my host grand- aunt. The length of the service is much shorter than what I am used to (as it is only an hour) yet the service itself is quite similar to that of my Anglican Church at home. My church here is called St. Christophe Notre Dame. It has a tower with bells in it (just like the movie “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”) and the architecture in the Church is beautiful. Last Saturday I was so proud of myself because for the first time I was able to understand a little bit of the sermon and sing and follow along in the hymns which were sung. One of the differences from my church at home (The Pro- Cathedral of Christ The King) and the church I attend now is that the people can wear what they want. The women wear PANTS!!! The other difference is that during communion, only the people on the alter drink wine whereas, in my church, everyone that is confirmed are able to drink the wine. I do not understand why they do not allow everyone to get the full communion, but I wont argue with them. In conclusion, the church here is very nice, yet hardly attended, which is also different from the Bahamas. Yet, I came here to understand cultural differences, and as of the conclusion of this month, I certainly am. |
