Sonja Reports on her East Coast Tour

May 10, 2006

Hi,

In the last two weeks I traveled at the east coast. Here is my report.

Flight to Baltimore 06-12-2006

Well today I flew to Baltimore where I met all the other exchange students that are doing the trip. The most are German (12 out of 47). I am sure that it will be a great trip, but I am really tired because yesterday there my host mum invited my first host family for a surprise birthday party and I went to bed really late and stood up really early.
Tomorrow we will go by bus to Washington.

My Birthday, 06-11-2006

Today we left the hotel at 8:15 . We traveled to Washington D. C. And went to the Arlington National Cemetery. It is a very big big cemetery that is still working with about 23 funerals per day. We visits Kennedy's leftover and the eternal flame and the grafveof the unknown soldiers where we saw a change of guard.
Then we went to a shopping mall and had lunch. We went to Mount Vernon, Washington's house and stood about 1 hour in line to visit the house. The country side here is so beautiful and there are green trees and beautiful lakes everywhere.
Well, it is my birthday and after dinner we had a pool party that was really freezing. I got a book cold ''Hairspray'' it is one of the musicals we will see in New York.
Tomorrow we will leave early so I will go to bed soon.

Visiting Washington # 2 06-12-06

We visited many different places today. We stood as always really early up and then we went into town. First we visited the Smithsonian Visitor's Center. Afterwards we had a tour in the Library of Congress. The buildings are really big and wonderful. We visited the Supreme Court and learned that there is a gym/basketball area over the court room. Then we had a special tour of the Capitol. The day ended with a visit in a museum of our choice.

Visiting Washington #3 06-13-2006

Washington D. C. is really the capitol of the U.S.A. And there are so many important buildings that it is not even possible to visit them all. Today we spend the morning in the National Holocaust Memorial Museum. The museum is really well done and touches many people personal. We also visited the Pentagon and went to the place of the airplane crash. The building is the second biggest office building in the world, but the day was not over. We had a tour in the Kennedy Center of concerts and performing arts.
When it became dark we went to the World War II , the Vietnam, the Sout Korean and the Lincoln Monuments.

Visiting Washington # 4 06-14-2006

Today was our last day in Washington D. C. . We went into town very early to get tickets for the Washington Monument. There is only a certain amount of tickets everyday that is given out in the morning. Our tickets were for the early afternoon and so we went to the White House Visitor's Center because we could not get into the White House, but of course we had enough time to take pictures in front of the fence. Then we went on the Washington Monument. It was really nice, but the weather was not the best so we could not see so far, but we saw the most of the places we visited.
Our last hours we spend in another Smithsonian Museum. We went to the National Meseum of Natural History. Then it was time to say good bye to Washington and we traveled to York in Pennsylvania.

Hershey Chocolate Factory 06-15-06

We left York early in the morning and went to Hershey Chocolate Factory and more important the Hershey Theme Park. We spend the day there. It was not very special, because you cannot compare it to Disney World, but it was a really fun day and it was good to day something else then just visiting and touring buildings and museums. Afterwards we went to our next hotel.

Atlantic City, New Jersey, 06-16-06

Today we took another day off and went to Atlantic City in New Jersey. There we enjoyed same hours of sun, water, sand and fun. The water was really called, but we had huge waves, that we don't have in Florida. After about half a hour in the water we just lay at the beach for some time and then we walk up and down the boardwalk in city with all the souvenir shops.
We left in the early afternoon to Philadelphia. Here we are home hosted. I am together with another German girl in a family. We have three host siblings and tomorrow we will go shopping with our host sister. This evening we went over to the other street side, where 5 other exchange students are hosted. All fifty students met and we hang out, played basketball, volleyball, soccer and danced.
Now it is movie time. ........

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 06-17-06

My host family is really great!! Today we slept in until 11 a.m. and then we went to South Street in Philadelphia together with my hostmum, a friend, my hostsister and her friend. South Street is a shopping street with a lot of typical shops all owned by foreigners with a lot of individual things.
Then we relaxed some time at the pool. We went to another meeting with all the exchange students. I played about on hour soccer and then we played volleyball. The house were near a park and there was a huge fire work for about 30 minute to celebrate the beginning if July 4th . Afterwards we hang out and danced. Now I am nearly finished dancing and tomorrow morning we will leave as always early in the morning.

Philadelphia, New York, 06-18-06

Today we left Philadelphia and New York and went by bus to NYC. First we went to the Central Park and worked around. Then we went to the Broadway performance of the Beauty and the Beast that was really amazing. Afterwards we had some freetime in New York City where we went to the Times Square. It took us about two hours to get out of the city and two the hotel.

New York City, 06-19-2006

Today we went very early to NYC and got a tour in the NBC studios. Then we made a cruise to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and look at the so famous NYC skyline, tomorrow we will go on the islands and visit them closer.

After lunch we went to the United Nations Building. It was very interesting to see people from all over the world working together. NYC is a town with so many cultures and languages that everywhere where we are going we meet somebody form a different country.
After it got dark we went to the Empire State Building and went up as far as possible. NYC is not less interesting in the evening then on the day.

New York City, 06-20-2006

Today was our last day in New York City and this is really sad, because not only that we have to leave our tour is nearly over, too Today was an ''easy'' day. We went with the ferry to Liberty Island where we walked around and then we went on the Stature of Liberty as high as possible. After lunch the ferry brought us to Ellis Island. To this island the most immigrants came who wanted to immigrate into the new America (today it is a museum). Because NYC is a city of music, theater and art we went to the musical called ''Hairspray''. The musical was really great and the singers where unbelievably good.

Boston, 06-21-2006

Today we left very early with the bus to Boston. It was good that we left so early because it took us 7 hours to get to Boston and so we did not had so much time before we went to a performance of the Blue Man Group. The performance was really grade and we sad right in front of the stage.
Tomorrow we will have time of our own in Boston.

Boston, 06-22-2006

Today was our last day on the tour. Nearly the whole day today was freetime. We got tickets for trolleys that we could use to get around in Boston. I and some friends decided to make a harbor tour and then to go out of town to Harvard. It was a lot of fun!!!
But today was also our last day and so we sat all together in the evening and talked about the last two weeks and signed, t-shirts, flags, and co. .
Tomorrow we all fly back in our so different homes.

Now I am back in Marathon, before I fly home on July 8th.
