Danielle's First Report

September 19, 2005

Ciao a tutti,
I am here safe and sound in Italy. I arrived on Thursday afternoon at about 5:30. I met so many people. I was lucky because the only time I was by myself was in the airport in the Bahamas and in Miami. When I got in Detroit I met a guy who is doing an exchange with his college to Italy, that helped the time to pass and I also learnt alot about the exchange program for college students. It was very interesting specially seeing that I had three hours to wait in Detroit's airport. the plane ride to Rome was very long but I also met a woman from Las Vegas and her husband is the chemist for Diet Coca Cola and the sister to Gatorade.. Powerade. The flight was also very interesting. It was hard to sleep on a eight hour flight but I managed to get a few minutes in, maybe an hour. When I finally arrived in Rome I was so lost. I was on this tiny concourse and they didn't have any signs that could help me, so I stood there with this map and that couldn't even help me, but thankfully I managed to use the little Italian I knew and found my way to where I was supposed to be. There I had to wait three hours to take my final plane to Cagliari. I met a woman from Cagliari who now lives in New York and I spoke with her a little and then on the plane ride I met a girl from Cagliari who was in canada for the summer. Everyone was so nice to me and willing to help me. Therefore I had a great first impression of Italy. The first night was so hard, I was so tired because I hadn't slept in over 24 hours and it just hit me I am going to be away from everyone and everything I know in a foreign country for 1 year. OMG.. and beacuse I was tired it made it so much worse, but my host mother and her sister and a guy named Gerardo who is just like family, tried to help me so much, but at that moment I just wanted to go to sleep to make it all go away. Well thank God that was the only bad time. Off and on I ave been a little sad but I have been so busy, I have had little time to think about everything back home. Everything has already been un believeable. In the bahamas we only have the beach, here You have the mountains and the beach and you can see the mountains from he beach it is so BEAUTIFUL. The only weird thing is the su is so hot but the water is so cold...
I love it here so far and I have met so many people. I will begin school on Tuesday, I don't know if I am excited or not yet. But that will be another experience, (my first day of school) wow.. I met the friends of Ilaria and they are very nice to me, they try to help me so much to learn the language, my Italian is coming along slowly but surely. I now can truly say I learn something new everyday.
I just want to say thank you to everyone, Rotary and my parents, who made this all possible. I will right more later and send pictures.

Miss you all in The Bahamas!!!
Ciao everyone,
Danielle Chestnut
