Catherine Went to a Glass Museum

March 14, 2006

Hello Everyone!

How is life in Florida?... (well for the inbounds) and Europe or Asia( for the outbounds)? And of course,  the Rotary people in nice warm Florida........meanwhile I am freezing here!!! Supposedly it should be spring but snow has come over the last two weeks... which I am a little bit sad about that, but I hope that in the upcoming weeks the temperature will be better... Last weekend i was in a glass museum in 'Porta Westfalica' a town 15 minutes away from my town.  I got to see bottles of beer since 1820! Can you believe that? I was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo shocked!... and I also saw Coca-Cola bottles and  milk bottles... I got to see how the workers used to live in the homes that were offered to them in order to work in the glass industry. Also I saw how they made a marmelade jar and little balls with different colors in them. I was really surprised to see the way how the people managed the hot glass with out fear or anything..... Of course it was really hot in the oven area and everything , but it was really cool to see such type of art. Then there were little houses where one could enter and you could see what glass consisted of, the first shapes and materials they used in order to make bottles or vases, antique royal glass pieces, buttons, (yes buttons for jeans or for shirts. )and a whole bunch of other things that right now I can not remember....

After seeing the glass museum, we( as in my host mom, dad, siblings and friend) went to where the river Weser intersects with the Porta Westfalica canal. The canal is at a higher level than the river so in order for ships to go to the river or vs. they must go through this 'elevator' . It works exactly like a normal elevator only that it has water and it is huge and it is for boats. When the boat wants to go to the river , it must go down and ,meanwhile the water is being pushed out to the river and then these huge doors go up and  it can go through. the same process is used for boats to go to the canal only that water is being pushed up(in order to be at the same level) it was really windy and cold and bright so it was kind of hard to  take a picture. But I got to and I hope that I will be able to send it soon.. before the Europe tour.

Next week on Thursday or Friday  we start for the Europe-Tour. So if you guys don't hear from me until mid April don't get upset!!!! (please) So I will try to write another report before I leave. Next Wednesday I change host families and this family has four kids!  I have heard that she is very nice and everything, so I am looking forwards to the new family. Yesterday I told my little host sister, Charlotte(11) that this weekend was my last weekend with them and she was like really? and then her beautiful blue eyes got with tears and red.... and so I hugged her for a long time... She was really sad about it... and so I invited her to the movies this weekend with me and one of her best friends. I will miss her alot, she is sooooo sweet and nice with me.. we always play together and well I hope that I will be able to see her even when I am in my other host family.

Other than that, everything here has been fine in my little town....  After school I sometimes go window shopping and just to see the nice old houses with wood and everything... School is fine... My friends are very nice to me so there is nothing I should complain about. Thank you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much for this opportunity.. I will be thankful my whole entire life!!!! It has been a wonderful experience here .

Only 4 more months and I'm back.... geez... time is really flying...

God Bless You!

Sincerely,

Cathy
