Marco Visits Venice! October 26, 2004 |
|
| We, the Rotary Club of Hungary have just returned from a weekend in Venice! it was really great because I was able to speak Italian again! On Friday I had to take the train in the morning to go to Budapest, then we all met at in front of a Hotel, by 7 p.m. we were on the road, we were in one of those tourist buses, which was really nice, in all I have to say there were at least 30 of us, not counting the Rotarian chaperones. The trip was extremely long! and what made it really uncomfortable was that we had to sleep in the bus. I didn't get that much sleep but neither did anybody else. There were some problems when we were crossing from Hungary to Austria, we waited about an hour and a half, while they were checking our passports. Finally we reached Venice at around eight in the morning, soon after that we took a water taxi directly to Piazza San Marco, it was raining really badly and a lot of us got wet. When we reached San Marco, we entered a museum and saw a bunch of very interesting things, i saw the doge's palace, the senate's room, which was gigantic and completely covered in paintings, and we also went to the armory, which held very interesting weapons such as Venetian swords that were longer than me, a gun-sword that was really used, primitive rifles and so many things from other nations, you could really see from how many things Venice was influenced by. Then we went to the prisons, and one prison called " il ponte dei Sospiri" is a bridge with a prison inside it, the prisoner that was sentenced to death would be sent there so that he could see the beauty of Venice right before he was to be killed. After that me and a group of my rotary friends went to the Campanile, which means "bell tower" where we could see all of Venice from the top, since it had rained really bad, the piazza was flooded and they put up little tables so that people could walk on them, these tables were so crowded with tourists! it tool 15 minutes to get on the other side of the piazza! . We also went to the top of the Basilica of San Marco which was really beautiful during the sunset. Then we went around the city, i showed my friends a couple things i remembered from when i went with my brother just this summer, such as the house we stayed in with my friend and the supermarket we went to. Then we went to a restaurant and ate some really good pizza! which was great because pizza in Hungary is horrible! later we went back to san Marco to meet up with the rest of the rotary club and we headed back to the bus, the trip lasted a very long time back also, but i slept through a lot of it. I am very glad we went to Venice, I was considering running away! next weekend we will go to a little village in Hungary with a guided tour, I will send another report then. Arrivederci! | |
